Subtrochanteric Femoral Insufficiency Fracture Following Bisphosphonate Therapy for Osseous Metastases
We present the case of an insufficiency fracture of the femoral shaft in a 61-year-old man who had received bisphosphonate therapy to reduce the fracture risk from lytic renal cell carcinoma metastases to the spine. Approximately 1.5 years after beginning monthly intravenous infusions of zoledronic acid (Zometa), the patient complained of persistent thigh pain. Radionuclide bone scan showed mil...
متن کاملAtraumatic bilateral femur fracture in long-term bisphosphonate use.
Postmenopausal women with osteoporosis are commonly treated with the bisphosphonate class of medications, one of the most frequently prescribed medications in the United States. In the past 4 years, reports have been published implying that long-term bisphosphonate therapy could be linked to atraumatic femoral diaphyseal fractures. This article presents a case of a 67-year-old woman who present...
متن کاملPeriprosthetic Femoral Insufficiency Fracture in a Patient on Long-term Bisphosphonate Therapy
Recent literature shows an association between long-term bisphosphonate therapy and low-energy fractures of the subtrochanteric femur. It is thought that the pharmacology of bisphosphonates and stress characteristics of the subtrochanteric femur predispose patients on long-term therapy to fracture. There are few reports in the literature of bisphosphonate-associated periprosthetic fractures wit...
متن کاملSubtrochanteric Femoral Insufficiency Fracture in Woman on Bisphosphonate Therapy for Glucocorticoid-Induced Osteoporosis
We present the case of an 85-year-old woman who sustained a subtrochanteric femoral shaft insufficiency fracture after receiving bisphosphonate therapy for osteoporosis. After more than 6 years of taking risedronate sodium (Actonel) and daily supplemental calcium carbonate and vitamin D, the patient developed right anterior thigh pain that was worse with weight-bearing. A small, pyramidal ridge...
متن کاملSubchondral insufficiency fracture of the femoral head.
We report two cases of subchondral insufficiency fractures of the femoral head. Clinical manifestations of this lesion are nonspecific. Radionuclide bone scanning demonstrates early hyperactivity. Initial roentgenograms are usually normal. Magnetic resonance imaging establishes the diagnosis and rules out other conditions.
